Tis the season for 2012 stuff. Not particularly excited by anything (sb66 was the most exciting by far) but here are the new air9 and emd frames using hydro formed tubing with all of them featuring the new style of graphics first used on the a9c.
Stronger, Stiffer, Lighter. Typical of new products i guess. Stronger is good since they took a blow with their jet9 recall. Stiffer is arguable as stiffest in a hardtail isn’t the best thing. Lighter? Hmmmm. They had to enlist the help of a headset and a bb to illustrate that the frame is lighter.
OLD AIR 9 + EXTERNAL HEADSET + GXP BB = 1773g
NEW AIR 9 + INTEGRATED HEADSET + PF30 BB = 1661g
So without marketing speak the frame is pretty much the same weight. Intergrated headsets and pressfit bb’s are lighter than their traditional counterparts so it offsets the weight. Cheeky go at marketing their new frames as lighter.
Still, if all this translates to a better ride, then power to them. If i was to choose a 29er and had no idea with geo and such i would most likely default to niner as a brand that i can’t really go wrong on.
I do love the way the new bikes look though. The new hydroforming looks fantastic and the colour schemes should please everyone (i like all 4 bikerumor posted up). All you 29er fanboys might wanna hold up on ordering those 29er frames? *looks@Jarod/Trieu*
